Article Format Guidelines
We value the idea over the formatting but try to follow the guidlines.
1. Opinion Piece
- Goal: Challenge a prevailing dogma or offer a sharp, personal take on a scientific issue. Structure:
- Title: Try to avoid dry academic titles. Abstract: 3-4 sentences summarizing your core argument. The Hook: Start with the controversy or the “elephant in the room.” The Argument: a few distinct points. Use evidence, but keep it narrative-driven (0-5 references). The Takeaway: End with a clear implication or call to action.
2. Science News Analysis
- Goal: Explain why a recent study matters, cutting through the press release hype. Structure:
- Title: Conclusion of the paper Abstract: 3-4 sentences summary. The News: 1 paragraph summary of the event/study. The Context: How does this fit into the bigger picture? The Critique: What are the limitations? The Future: Where does this lead the field?
3. Hypothesis
- Goal: Share a “what if” that hasn’t been tested yet. We want the messy, unpolished idea. Structure:
- Title: Again void dry academic titles. Abstract: 3-4 sentences summary. The observation/The Question: What are you asking or observed in nature? The Premise: Your proposed mechanism (even if it sounds crazy). The “What If”: Potential outcomes if this were true. The Gap: What data is missing to prove it?
