“Just imagine that improving sleep could potentially help reduce the risk of disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease or support brain health more broadly. That is a fascinating possibility and one that deserves much more research attention.“, Prof Christian Benedict.
A year ago I became a father, and since then, my sleep has been drastically reduced. When I started digging into sleep research I came across a vast number of papers by one professor of sleep studies at Uppsala University. He is also the spokesperson for the Swedish Sleep Research Society. I reached out to ask about his research and where the field is heading.
“First of all, I think sleep itself is an underappreciated superpower that too few people in our society truly recognize, and, even more concerning, many may not even be aware of its importance. Based on the research I review for journals and how the field has evolved in recent years, I believe that targeting sleep as a way to prevent major diseases or support their treatment is one of the most exciting translational directions right now.“
Like the brain-body connection in our previous articles (Do We Have a Soul?, The Body as a Whole), sleep shows mind and body as one system. A sleepless mind will affect the body. But what happens when sleep fails?
His research has shown how even one night of sleep deprivation can elevate biomarkers for CNS damage in healthy young men. How can we apply this knowledge in practice?
“Your brain needs time each day for recovery, consolidation, and integration of what you have learned, as well as for preparing for the challenges of the next waking period. A large part of this work takes place during sleep. When sleep is insufficient or highly fragmented, these processes become less effective or interrupted, which may increase the “stress” load on the brain. Consequently, after nights of poor or inadequate sleep, studies often observe signs of a stress response in the brain, for example through biomarkers commonly used in neurological research. The important point, however, is that while this response can be detected even after a single night of sleep loss, it does not mean that one bad night will cause lasting brain damage or accelerate brain aging. The brain is highly resilient. The concern arises when poor sleep becomes chronic and the repeated stress response accumulates over time, potentially contributing to increased vulnerability to conditions such as cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. This is why maintaining good sleep habits is an important part of supporting long-term brain health.”
But the science is only useful if it reaches the public, and in Sweden, that’s not always happening. Is there a missing piece in the public debate on sleep and health in Sweden and are there common misconceptions in need of correction?
“A major challenge is that sleep medicine is still not recognized as an independent medical specialty in Sweden, meaning that physicians cannot formally specialize in this area. This creates challenges in building sufficient expertise and ensuring that patients with sleep problems receive the care they need. Another issue is that clinical guidelines can vary between regions, for example regarding the treatment of insomnia, and these recommendations are not always fully aligned with European guidelines. This can create inequalities in how sleep disorders are managed. A further challenge is how sleep is portrayed in social media and the broader public debate. When people follow sleep research, they may get the impression that the evidence is always absolute, that sleep is either “good” or “bad” and that even small deviations will inevitably lead to serious health consequences. As a sleep researcher, I strongly believe that sleep matters, but we also need a more nuanced discussion. We should communicate what the science actually shows and avoid overemphasizing individual lifestyle factors as the sole determinants of health and well-being. Health is a team effort, much like on a football pitch. Sleep is an important player, but it is only one part of the team.”
As a sleep-deprived new father, I had to ask: what can we actually do?
“Regularity is key. Try to keep a consistent daily routine, the same general rhythm every day. Be active during the daytime, become less active in the evening and at night, eat during the day with clear meal times, and avoid eating too late. Get plenty of daylight exposure and reduce exposure to artificial light in the evening. A calming wind-down routine can also help signal to your brain that it is time to take the “exit ramp” from wakefulness into sleep. But perhaps most importantly: do not turn sleep into a performance task. The more you try to force or optimize sleep, the more likely you are to struggle with it. Sleep is something that happens naturally when we create the right conditions, it is not something we need to achieve perfectly.”
The last point really strikes a sensitive spot in me. I have a tendency to think and force routines according to what is perceived to be good. However, what could be needed is allowing myself to relax and not push too much, and just focus on creating a healthy routine rather than aiming for perfection. Just trust the process, because you can’t hack your way to rest.
